friend unashamedly asking for money? what should i do?

When I was in grade school, I attended a public school in a small town in Albay, Philippines. I moved on to a private school in the city during my high school years. I took up Applied Mathematics in the most prestigious school in the country, the University of the Philippines (sorry La Sallites and Ateneans, UP is the best :) ) in my college days.

I still see my grade school friends when I go home in the province once in a while. I seldom do that though because RJ has sports activities during summer break. When I went home August of 2009 for my Lola's (grandmother) wake, a friend visited me. Let's call her JJ. She went to my house with her fourth child and with a big belly.

JJ: "My eldest, you're inaanak (godchild) is Grade 6 already."
Me: "My inaanak?" *confused* I visited you when you gave birth, but you didn't tell me I am the godmother. Of course I didn't say that, I didn't want to embarrass her.
JJ: "Everytime P comes home, he always give gifts and money to us. You know, we're very poor. Last christmas, when R was here, she also has pasalubong and gave me some money." P and R were our grade school friends.
Me: "So, how are you and your husband? How many kids do you have?"
JJ: "I am going to give birth to my fifth child soon. But we don't have money, I can't even afford to give birth in the health center. We don't even have rice for lunch today. My husband helps clean tombstones at the cemetery near our place."
Me: "Does RC live near your house? How is she?" RC is another grade school classmate. I wanted to change the subject because I don't want to be more depressed (we just had Lola's funeral day before).
JJ: "She works in the Middle East. She has a big house already."
Me: "Why don't you let your husband apply in an overseas job also?"
JJ: "We'd rather be together with our children."
Me saying to self: You'd rather see your kids go hungry that be separated from your husband for a few years.

We talked for an hour, she talking more about her poor, sorry life. I gave her rice and cakes for her kids. I also gave her some money but not without telling her, "Use that money to give birth in the health center/hospital. Stop getting pregnant also".

Fast forward to today. I received a text, "Manay this is JJ. How are you? I got your cellular phone number from R".

"Hi JJ, how are you?"

"I'm fine. I have a new baby.Your godchild is going to graduate from grade school this March. I want to ask for your help. I also asked help from R and she gave me your number. As you know, my family is poor."

Saying to self: If my godchild's tuition fee is only a thousand or two, I can help her if she really wants to continue high school. If and only if her grades in grade school are not failing and she won't quit until she finish schooling.

"How is my godchild? Is she going to continue high school? Does she have good grades?"

I got a reply from her asking for a cellular phone load.

Uh-oh, I got scared. Honestly! I am not kidding. I am not filthy rich to support a family of 7! She is not even ashamed to ask for money. Her husband is a big guy, not tall but big, he has the body to do hard labor to support his family.

Should I give her money again? My sister said that she might get used to asking money from me. What should I do?

what is your dream job?

I want to someday set up an online tutorial for students who are having problems in math. I have mentioned a lot of times already that I am an Applied Mathematics graduate. I have been tutoring students who are having difficulty in math for a few years now. I am proud to say that I have helped students conquer their fear of math by tutoring math in a fun way. I wish to be able to reach out to students around the globe someday.

But before I can do that, I have to develop some other skills aside from being good in math. Through Elearning from Learn.com, I can obtain this dream job, this dream business. Learn.com is the leader in on-demand workforce development and productivity. Recently, it became the first company in history to provide a single, integrated platform for those seeking skill improvement for a particular job profile and those seeking to hire skilled, "job ready" workers.

The platform is ideal for people, like me, wishing to increase knowledge and skills on any subject, or to share their knowledge and domain expertise with the world. It truly is the world's first and only on-demand knowledge network. I don't have to enroll in business school to learn about managing a business, setting it up or manage my workers. In just a few clicks of a button, I can just read about it online.

What about you? What is your dream job? If you already have it, I am sure you can still find ways to improve yourself through the help of Learn.com.

iPad?

What is an iPad? The iPad, is larger in size but similar in design to Apple's popular iPhone. CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday said "so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smart phone."

The iPad has a 9.7-inch touch screen, is a half-inch thick, weighs 1.5 pounds and comes with 16, 32 or 64 gigabytes of flash memory storage. It comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity built in. Jobs said the device has a battery that lasts 10 hours and can sit for a month on standby without needing a charge.

The basic iPad models will cost $499, $599 and $699, depending on the storage size, when it comes out worldwide in March.

email or snailmail?

I prefer the old fashioned way of sending and receiving letters---snailmail. Why? Handwritten letters and messages are more personal. I am more excited in finding a letter in our mailbox than in finding emails in my inbox.

Mailboxes in our neighborhood are pretty much old fashioned as well. I am thinking of looking for mail boxes that can be purchased online. I will also suggest it to our neighbors. I prefer wall mount mailboxes because it won't take up too much space in front of the house. And it is a good accessory in homefronts also. I will look for a colorful one that won't clash with the color of the house.

I don't understand why a lot of people have to deal, year after year, with bad credit. Many of these people just doesn't do anything to improve their credit score. Is it really hard to fix a bad credit record?

I tried searching online for credit repair companies. I used the keywords "fix my credit".

The most reliable website that I found was www.repairyourbadcredit.com. Browsing the site showed me that removing a bad credit or improving a good credit is so easy. There are a lot of positive advantages if one has a good credit right? So, if you have a bad credit record, what are you waiting for? Fix and improve your credit history now.

Rx: Minute Maid

I spent the last few days of 2009 and greeted 2010 with colds. It was accompanied by a terrible headache that left me bedridden the first few days of being sick. My sister, MG, bought a bottle of Minute Maid for me when she passed by the grocery store near our house.

My sister knows that I am not a big fan of water. And because I have colds, I need lots of fluid intake. Mineral, distilled or tap water, I'm sorry I just don't like the taste. Don't tell my son though, I require him to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. My sister left the Minute Maid on the table when she arrived home.

The next thing that happened...

...they didn't stop until they finished every single drop of my Minute Maid. I am glad that they enjoyed drinking Minute Maid together.

Good thing my sister, MA, needs to go to the grocery store to do the weekly grocery shopping. I gave her a list of things we need in the house.

The first thing she did, after getting a shopping cart was go to the Minute Maid shelf.

I guess she went Minute Maid panic buying that day.

She even grabbed one from the freezer to drink on the way home.

Finally, I can now drink Minute Maid. With a bowl (big bowl, yikes!) of hot macaroni soup. Even when I am sick, I can still enjoy drinking Minute Maid.

After being sick for a few days...

...I am cold-and-headache-free. But that didn't stop me from drinking Minute Maid. Prevention is still better than cure. I enjoy drinking Minute Maid more when I am not sick.

What about you? Have you tasted Minute Maid already? If not, you are missing half of your life. Go and grab one now in a store near you.

give us better news

Have you noticed that more than 50% of the news that is shown on television are so unworthy and a waste of time to watch? The two leading television networks, here in the Philippines, should put more news about business, economy and inspiring stories. Who is interested with news about people jumping off a bridge, a mom poisoning the whole family or a crazy person sitting on top of a billboard?

They are encouraging a lot of depressed and poor people in the country to copy what others are doing to escape poverty. Is the Philippines such a wasted country that these television stations can't find stories that are news-worthy? Please, enough with Manny Pacquiao and Krista Ranillo's alleged affair. It is such a waste of airtime, don't you think? Oh yeah, nobody is interested anymore with Ivler and his mom.

what? you didn't fix the bathroom sink?

We are renting a condominium unit for six months because we have a problem with the unit that we bought in another condominium. The owner though didn't fix the glass sink in the bathroom. A week before moving in, I already noticed the leak. The unit owner promised to have it fixed and have all the other glass sinks checked as well. I called her a few days before we moved in and she said that everything in the unit is working well. She hired a plumber and electrician to fix everything that needs to be fixed. She asked her housemaid to clean the unit from ceiling, cabinets and have the floor mopped with disinfectant. She even removed the carpet because I told her that my son is asthmatic.

Fast forward to the present, I noticed that the glass vessel sink is leaking again. She should have bought a replacement glass sink from MR Direct Sinks because they have superior quality product at an affordable price.

I hope she replace the broken sinks as soon as possible.

american embassy, why are you so cruel to my friend?

My friend J is heartbroken because her father died. All of J's family are now based in the USA and Canada. She is all alone here in the Philippines. She won't be able to see her dad for the last time because she wasn't given a tourist visa by the American embassy. This is the third time she applied for one. She wasn't planning to apply anymore but, when her dad was fighting for his life, she wanted to be with her dad and the rest of the family.

Year 2001, about 9 years ago, her dad had a heart transplant. The first time she applied for a tourist visa, and also the first time the US embassy denied her one. The consul's reason was J didn't provide enough reason for them to believe that she will come back to the Philippines before her tourist visa expires. Good thing the heart transplant was successful.

Second time that she applied, she just wants to spend time with her family. A lot cheaper for her to go there than for all the rest of the family to join her here for a vacation. She presented the embassy with her bank accounts, land titles, employer's certificate and other assets. Again, they denied her application.

Two weeks ago, her dad had colds and cough. He became so weak and he wasn't cooperating with his doctor's anymore. The medication and the tubes inserted in his body were so painful for him already. J tried to apply for a tourist visa. But it was too late to hug her dad alive for the last time. Before her scheduled interview, her dad died. She heard his last breath on the phone.

This tuesday, January 19, she arrived very early for her morning interview in the US embassy. She was very hopeful that maybe she can still hug her dad for the very last time. Her family decided to wait for J before cremating her dad. She went home with a heavy and bleeding heart, she didn't get a tourist visa.

Why is the american embassy so CRUEL to my friend. She just wanted to grieve with her family, a two day visa was enough for her. She doesn't even care if embassy people escort her 24/7, pick her up and bring her to the airport, even put a leash on her for all she care. She doesn't have any intentions of staying there. She recently got promoted again and she can have a luxurious life here.

All she wanted was to see her dad, for the last time.

until when should a mother protect his child?

Are you going to protect your child if he is a criminal? Are you going to hide your child in a safe place if there's a warrant of arrest because of illegal possession of firearms and murder? That's what Marlene Aguilar did. She is the mother of road-rage killing suspect Jason Ivler.

Ivler exchanged gunfire when agents of the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine equivalent of the FBI, raided their house early morning of January 18. They have already raided the house twice before but never found him. He shot two NBI agents but he sustained gunshot wounds to the right shoulder and left upper abdomen.

He was able to elude arrest when their house was raided before because of his mother. The mother is now facing charges as well. Is this how a mother should protect her child? Is this the right way to show a mother's love to her child?

scent that i love

If you'll ask me to choose between cologne and perfume, I will definitely choose cologne. Not because of my son's asthma and allergy problems. I just like the mild scent of colognes. Perfume smell irritates my nose and give me headaches. Milder scented perfumes though are For a few months already, I am addicted to the scent of "Bench Bratsplash Strawberry Shake" cologne. What I love about this cologne's scent is the sweet, delicious smell that lasts all day long.

it's that time of the month again

My lower abdomen is so painful again. It's that time of the month when I have to endure dysmenorrhea for the first two to three days of my menstrual period. Why do I have to endure this tremendous pain every month. Maybe I should exercise more regularly. I should not just exercise when I feel like it, from now on I should exercise everyday.

I am not a big fan of pain relievers. Even when I was giving birth to my son, I didn't ask for a pain reliever right away unlike others who are regulars of the online site. I guess the monthly visits of dysmenorrhea helped me become used to severe abdominal pain. The contraction pain that I experienced while giving birth was just like the dysmenorrhea pain that I have every month.

I read somewhere online that pain relievers usually works by decreasing the brain's perception and response to pain. It also reduces the size or magnitude of the pain signal passed from one nerve to another. For the longest time already, I have survived the pain of dysmenorrhea every month. I don't need to buy prescription or even non-prescription dysmennorhea drugs eventhough the pain that I experience is so unbearable.

Girl Talk #3: Harvey

His name is Harvey, my first crush. Up to now, after 20++ years, we still haven't met personally. But still he was my first...crush.

I have a diary, all for purposes of writing down sightings of Harvey. I don't have it anymore, sadly, I could have posted excerpts of notes I have jotted down. My note's -- it's usually like this, "I have seen Harvey today, on my way home from school. He is surrounded by chickens. He looks sooo cute feeding them." Or "Seen Harvey at 330 pm, he is driving his yellow jeepney".

Memories. Wish I can be a teenager again.

how to get client's from all over the globe

I put up a homebased travel agency due to boredom when my son became a preschooler. I started by attending seminars and researching online tutorials about putting up a travel agency. I offer my services to family, friends and friends of friends. I am planning on marketing the many wonderful sights of the Philippines to people from all over the world.

There is one problem though that might become a problem to this plan. I can only speak two languages: English and Filipino. People from other countries doesn't speak my language, Filipino, and some can't even speak English. There is only one solution to this problem that I can think of - a translator. I'm planning to put up a website that has pages in English but has a translation, in one click of a button, to the users desired language.

I am sure that a lot of people have heard of beaches (with fine white sand and crystal clear water) and wonderful sceneries here in the Philippines. Most travel websites though are in English and non-English speaking tourists need to have someone translate it for them first. I'm sure my website will help them learn more about my country in their own language.

rj's mama is not feeling well

I have been sneezing a lot for the past few days. Yesterday I was asleep until 10 am because I feel so tired! I don't have a fever or cough but I have a "full feeling" on my head. My nose is congested, I can't breath while lying down. Yup, I have the (common) cold symptoms.

I really don't feel well. Have to rest. RJ has school already tomorrow.
