keeping your mind sharp

We exercise to keep our body strong and healthy. But it’s not only our body that needs our attention. Our brain also needs “exercise” to keep it alert. As early as now, I’m 35 turning 36 in exactly 3 days, I try to give my brain the exercise that it needs.

Here are some of the things that I do to hopefully keep my brain healthy and alert.

1. Board Games - I do this with my son every night. It’s our bonding time before going to sleep and aside from helping me get the “brain exercise” that I need, it helps my son use his “thinking cap” as well.

2. Books - I like espionage books, it makes my brain “excited”. Thriller and science fiction also does the same thing. When I read these books, my mind works overtime, ahead of what I’m actually reading.

3. Puzzle - I used to buy these huge puzzles -floor and building puzzles. But our condo is quite small so we don’t have a space for that now. I'm thinking of buying money puzzles, me and my son can use this in lieu of our before-bedtime chess game once in a while.

4. Facebook Games - I play Bejeweled Blitz and Diamond Dash to keep my mind sharp. Other 3-in-a-row games will also do the trick.

Do you take care of your brain? What do you do to make it sharp, healthy and make sure that it’s still useful when you reach the “prime of your life”?

happy birthday to me!

My birthday was yesterday, September 11, and I am now 35! I don’t feel that old though, I feel like I’m just in my early 20’s. I had an early birthday celebration with my sisters, nephew and cousin. Of course RJ was with us.

Italiannis - Italian restaurant

I was overwhelmed with the birthday greetings and wishes that I got on facebook from my facebook friends. A day before my birthday, my facebook account was already flooded with greetings and notifications.

Because I have deadlines to meet, we just had lunch at Lola Maria’s Restaurant at Legend Hotel in Pasig. It was my first time to try out that restaurant.

Overall, I had a wonderful birthday weekend.

facebook not safe?

I was reading a blog when I noticed a news headline on my browser dashboard about a girl getting threatened on facebook.

She was a cheerleader in high school and most probably one of the IT girls. She received an invitation to be a friend, on her facebook account, by a schoolmate who she was never friends with. This guy was the nerdy type and probably very unpopular during their high school days.

The first few PM's (personal message) were friendly until it got to a point when he was sending messages that were too uncomfortable for her already. She then sent a message with STOP written 100 times. That's when the scary emails began.

She then created a facebook page "If I get killed tonight, this is why" and posted all threatening messages there. Fortunately, her mom is a cop. Her mom helped her report the incident to the right authorities. The guy is now in jail.

My two cents? Facebook is safe to use. It's the facebook user who's making it unsafe. Don't put personal informations about yourself, don't broadcast your daily activities and be a more responsible facebook user. That's all you have to do to be safe online.

what I dont like about facebook

The tagging.

Tagging pictures, and other things like videos, has become a hobby for some people. I have been tagged from ugly pictures of me during times-I-want-to-forget to pictures of the newest POS systems available in the market these days.

Ordinary people use facebook to communicate with families and friends. Businesses use it to make people know of their new products and services. Tagging is really not that bad. But facebook users should be responsible in tagging other people.

it takes a real man to wear pink

... but playing sorority life on facebook is a different story. I know of a guy or two, one is even an uncle *gasp*, who registered and has been actively playing this facebook application for some time now. I wonder if they were half-asleep when they registered. Maybe not, if they still play it up to now.

The people behind Sorority Life should then start making a Fraternity Life version. These men should be stopped from invading Sorority Life.

I may sound seriously disturbed about this but I actually am not. Go ahead REAL MEN, invade the girly-games-that-I-don't-play on facebook. I don't really care.

who's fault is it? facebook!

Gone are the days when my dad and mom doesn't even want to look at the computer. Now, my parent's who are now in their 60's, has become computer literate. They now know how to use a computer mouse, yay!

My dad is even willing to learn how to blog. I will introduce him to blogging and google adsense. I am sure he will earn more than me. He spends more time online than I do.

my sisters are all addicts

And sad to say, my dad as well.

They are all addicted to facebook.

facebook, facebook logo

I have my proof. I discreetly took my sister's picture while she was checking her facebook account and eating lunch at the same time. She can't even turn off the computer for her to eat lunch! Funny and alarming at the same time.

facebook, addict, certified facebook addict

I should show them this list, better find out now if they need facebook detoxification.

10 signs you’re a Facebook addict:

1. You spend more time thinking about the content of your next status post then you do about your work.
2. You walk by someone and physically “poke” them and it doesn’t phase you or them.
3. You were up until 2 a.m. waiting for your international friends to update their statuses.
4. You make your grocery list based on what others are eating from their status updates.
5. You feel important because you have been invited to become a “fan” of 200 pages in one week.
6. You spend the weekend weeding your garden…in FarmVille…and afterward feel tired, like you have actually completed manual labor.
7. You feel like you went on vacation with your friend because you followed their status updates and pictures and see no reason why you would actually need to go on a vacation.
8. You don’t decline any request to join a group as you think this is building community.
9. Instead of leaving a sticky note on your boss’ desk, you just write on his office wall.
10. The number of comments you receive on a status update determines if you feel popular or not.
