As much as I don’t want my son to hate me, I also don’t want him to wear eye glasses yet. Last time I had my eyes checked, wanted to know if I need reading glasses already, doctor said I still have a 20/20 vision. I’m already 35.
My son is only 10 years old. And I’m worried that too much television, computer and handheld games will destroy his eyesight early on his life. So yes, he can hate me now because I know he’ll thank me later on, in the near future, for being a strict mom. Less time from using the above mentioned technology is being strictly enforced in our house. When I say less time, it means none-at-all during weekdays and 3 hours only on Saturday, Sundays and holidays.
Do you have rules like this in your household?

Now I learned something about parenting here na. haha. My parents are strict when it comes television and computers when i was younger. Ewan ko nalang ngayon..
when i was a kid, i find wearing eyeglasses cool and i always want to wear one, but now that my vision is no longer 20/20, i don't want to wear reading glasses. good for you, you still have 20/20 vision.
My mum also did that to us, regulated TV watching and more studying. It has its great advantages too and I can attest of that.
Thanks for this!
I had my eyes destroyed when I was like 15. Mejo maaga na din kaya ayun, it's hard for me to recognize people's face kapag malayo.
Aww we're of the same age and my eyesight is so poor 350/380.. ;-( but I am still proud of Filipino kids I rarely see kids wearing glasses in our country. In Malaysia almost all kids even 5 -7 yrs old are wearing glasses (specially chinese kids) I don't even understand it's too weird for them to have it that young..
it's okay, just explain to him that it is for his good at paano nakakatulong ung pagbabawal mo sa kanya... but do this without depriving him also... Yahweh bless. http://trunklocker.blogspot.com/2012/01/to-write-or-not-to-write.html
we also have rules at home (just different from yours)...i must say i salute you for your values and being strict mom is your choice.
i know TV, computer may in the future affect vision but i can say mine is still fine even after watching tv, reading in the dark, computer, etc all these years...
My mother was strict when I was young. Of course they tried to protect me from getting my eyes bad, but it turns out, there was no choice. The shape of my eye socket is inherited which forces me to wear glasses at an early age.
But anyway, it's always good to control your kids on certain times. We don't want to expose our kids too much of anything.
Our children were young kids in the days when mankind already have TV, computers, Nintendo Family Computer (Super Mario was the 'in' game then) and Game & Watch. We never prevented their enjoying them because they will be children only once in their life time. That's how they had them and we don't have any regret with the results.
Yep! 2 hours time only for those things. :)
it's not only about destroying his eyesight. It's also one way of making him responsible. I admire you for instilling these kind of rules inside the house. Kids nowadays has the tendency to get spoiled.
That is my problem with my kids especially the ledest .He loves to play computer games but I only let him do it during weekends and i dont set times later unlike before. i think its to set the hours he can use it.
when the time comes that I'm having my own kids, I prefer to teach them the old ways... no tv, cellphone or any gadgets, or regulate its usage only on weekends.. :)
It's how you handle your kid that will make sense. And he won't regret later on.
first and foremost, you have to be a parent. Should you need to put your foot down, then so be it.
Oh that is too tough I guess. I hope you'll give him at least half day on weekends to tinker with his gadgets.

gosh, this is my biggest dilemma because my daughter is such a TV-addict. i now plan to hide the RC during weekdays which would mean, no TV-time for me, too. i envy your 20/20 vision:)
well, in everything naman, more is bad, less is better. it doesn't only help preserve you son's good eye sight - it will also contribute in him realizing to use his time well in more important matters... hope so
Whe only subscribed to cable TV and broadband internet when my daughter turned 9 cause that was the time that we saw that she was responsible enough when it comes to TV watching and internet surfing. Big sacrifice on our part because even us wasn't updated with what was going on in the cable/cyber world but looking back, we never regretted our decision because we can see how she can forego TV watching now and how she can discipline herself with the shows that she thinks she can and cannot watch and with the amount of time she would spend watching and surfing the net. And because of his decision also, she has become a reader instead as she turned to books.:)
