Be warned!

Have you ever been in this situation?

Cashier: "Ma'am / Sir, we ran out of 5 cents (or 10/25 etc). Is it ok if your change is 5 cents short?"

philippine coinsOr worse, the cashier short-change you without even informing you that they ran out of coins? Why do they ran out of coins even in the morning when store just opened?

There was this one time when everyone ahead of me in the counter was short-changed. Imagine how much grocery stores "steal" every single day? Yes it's outright stealing because for the longest time that they've been in operation, they should have already “mastered” how many coins they need to have in their cash register each day to be able to give the exact change to all their customers.

Last time I bought a silver jewelry, I was ready to contra-battle their trick. I will never allow them to steal from me, I now bring 5, 10 and 25 coins in my coin purse. I'm a smart shopper, you should be one too.

Yes, they often do that. And you are right they should have mastered their coin requirements. Minsan sinasadya na yata..Anyway, good for you, you are now bringing coins! Nice!

Honestly, I can forgive the cashier in situations like this. And honestly, there are times when it's me who has no enough small coins for the exact amount of my purchase and I'd be the one to ask the cashier that I'm 5 cents short. Luckily, the cashier would let me get the item even if I was 5 or 25 cents short. I think it's not really stealing when they have informed you right away that they can't give you the exact change. =)

This is one of the reason, I usually pay using credit cards plus it gives you a chance to review your purchases in a month because of the billing statement.

It doesn't make much difference for one buyer but if you consider the volume of transactions they have in one day, it definitely adds up. :)

I wonder what will happen if a buyer pays them 5 cents short lol. Will they be ok with it as well?

I agree, the SM Mall in the Philippines does this on a regular basis, especially when we're done paying up for the grocery. But like you, I also keep my 5, 10 and 25 cents just in case they pull this line on me again.

I always make it a point to bring a handful of five-, ten-, and twenty-five centavo coins to avert those acts of "stealing."

AGREE AGREE AGREE.
i get pissed off when they don't give the "exact" change kahit klaro naman talaga na may tinatagong centavos sa pouch. i also bring 25 centavos too lalo na for jeepney fare.

Well, you have a point here, sometimes people take 5 or 10 cents for granted. They never mind it's value at all.
